HAIR LOSS

Hair Loss Overview

Hair loss (alopecia) may affect only your scalp or your entire body, and it may be temporary or permanent. It may be hereditary, due to hormonal changes, medical conditions, or a normal part of aging symptoms. Anyone can develop hair loss, but it is more common in men.

Baldness usually refers to heavy hair loss on the scalp. And hereditary hair loss is the most common cause of baldness. Some people like to leave hair loss untreated and hidden. Others cover baldness with haircuts or cosmetics, or by wearing hats or headwear. However, some people choose one of the other treatments available to prevent more hair loss or restore growth.

Talk to your doctor about the cause of hair loss and the appropriate Hair Loss treatment treatment options before you begin treating it

Symptoms

Depending on the causes. It may occur suddenly or gradually, or affect only your scalp or your entire body.

Signs And Symptoms Of Hair Loss Include:

• Gradually thinning of the hair at the top of the head. This is the most common type of hair loss, as it affects people as they age. In men, hair often begins to recede at the hairline on the forehead. As for women, they are usually exposed to widening distances between hair. One of the most common patterns of hair loss among older women is a receding hairline (anterior fibrous alopecia).
• Circular or patchy bald spots. Some people lose their hair in the form of circular or patchy bald spots on their scalp, beard or eyebrows. You may feel itchy or sore skin before the hair falls out.
• Sudden hair loss. Exposure to physical or emotional trauma can cause hair to relax. A strand of hair may fall out when combed, washed, or even after gently pulling it. This type of hair loss usually causes general hair thinning, but it is also temporary.
• Loss of hair all over the body. Certain medical problems and treatments – such as cancer chemotherapy – may cause all-body hair to be lost. And this hair will grow again.
• Spread of scaly patches on the scalp. This is one of the indicators of a ringworm infection. This spread may be accompanied by hair breakage, redness, swelling, and sometimes oozing.

    When To Visit The Doctor

See your doctor if you are concerned about hair loss (hair loss) for you or your child and want a treatment. For women who have a receding hairline (anterior fibrous alopecia), talk to your doctor about early treatment to avoid severe and permanent baldness.

Also, talk to your doctor if you notice sudden or patchy hair loss or more than normal hair loss (hair loss) when combing or washing your or your child’s hair. Sudden hair loss (hair loss) may be a sign of a medical condition that requires Hair Loss  treatment.

    The Reasons
People lose about 50 to 100 hairs a day. This is not usually noticed because new hair is growing at the same time. Hair loss occurs when new hair does not replace lost hair

    Factors:
    • Family history (genetics). The most common cause of hair loss is a genetic condition that occurs with age. This condition is called androgenic alopecia, male pattern baldness, and female pattern baldness. It usually occurs gradually and in predictable patterns, as the hairline recedes and bald patches appear in men and thinning hair along the crown of the scalp in women.

    • Hormonal changes and medical conditions. Many conditions can cause permanent or temporary hair loss, including hormonal changes due to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause and thyroid problems. Medical conditions include alopecia areata, which is linked to the immune system and causes hair loss in patches, scalp infections such as ringworm, and a disorder of trichotillomania called trichotillomania.

    • Medicines and nutritional supplements. Hair loss can be caused by the side effects of some medications, such as those used to treat cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout and high blood pressure.

    • Head radiotherapy. Hair may not grow back the same as it was before.

    • A stressful event. Many people experience general hair loss after several months of physical or emotional trauma. This type of hair loss is temporary.

    • Hairstyles and treatments. Excessive hairstyles or hairstyles that pull your hair too hard can cause a type of hair loss called traction alopecia, for example excessive hair braiding. Hair treatments that use hot oil and straightener treatments can cause hair loss. If scarring occurs, hair loss may be permanent

    Risk Factors
There are a number of factors that can increase the risk of hair loss, including:
    • Family history of baldness on the part of your mother or father
    • Age
    • Significant weight loss
    • Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes and lupus
    • Stress
    • Malnutrition

    Protection
Most cases of baldness are caused by genetic characteristics (male pattern baldness and female pattern baldness). This type of hair loss cannot be prevented.

These tips may help you avoid preventable types of hair loss:
Be gentle with your hair. Use a detangling tool and avoid pulling hair when using a hairbrush and combing your hair, especially when wet. A wide-toothed comb may help prevent pulling hair. Avoid harsh treatments like hot rollers, curling irons, hot oil treatments and sustainable chemical treatments that are used to straighten or curl hair. And reduce hair pulling from hairstyles that use rubber bands, barrettes and braids.

Ask Our Vittal Teamabout any medications and supplements that you take that may cause hair loss.

Protect your hair from the sun and other sources of UV rays.

Quit smoking. Some studies show an association between smoking and baldness in men.
If you’re being treated with chemotherapy, ask your doctor about a cooling cap. This cap can reduce the risk of hair loss during chemotherapy
